Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata): “The reef’s sponge specialist.” Named for its narrow, pointed, bird-like beak, the hawksbill uses it to reach into crevices on coral reefs, where it feeds mostly on sponges. Its shell has overlapping scutes with beautiful amber and brown patterns, which is why it was hunted for centuries for “tortoiseshell.” Today the hawksbill is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Never buy tortoiseshell products.
