Spiny Softshell (Apalone spinifera): “The pancake turtle, with a leathery shell and a snorkel for a nose.” Instead of hard scutes, the spiny softshell has a flat, flexible, leathery shell with small spiny bumps along its front edge. Its long, snorkel-like snout lets it breathe while buried in sand or mud, and it is one of the fastest-swimming turtles around. Spiny softshells live in rivers and lakes across much of North America. A TurtleFluent kids tee with realistic turtle art on the front and the TurtleFluent.com mark on the back.
