Russian Tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii, also called Agrionemys horsfieldii): “The little digger from the Central Asian steppe.” This small tortoise comes from the dry steppes and scrublands of Central Asia and has four claws on each front foot, which it uses to dig deep burrows. To escape harsh heat and cold, it can spend much of the year dormant underground. Russian tortoises are popular pets that can live 40+ years, so they are a long-term commitment.
