Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys kempii): “The smallest, rarest sea turtle.” With a round, gray-olive shell only about 2 feet long, the Kemp’s ridley is the smallest sea turtle in the world. It nests mainly on beaches in Tamaulipas, Mexico, and South Texas, where females come ashore together in a famous mass daytime nesting called the “arribada.” It feeds mostly on crabs in shallow coastal waters. Listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, it is the most endangered sea turtle on Earth.
