Galápagos Giant Tortoise (Chelonoidis niger complex): “The giant of the islands.” The Galápagos giant tortoise is the largest living tortoise. Scientists now recognize several species, roughly one per island or volcano group. Big males can top 400 pounds, and these tortoises can live more than 100 years. Tortoises on wetter, grassy islands tend to have rounded, dome-shaped shells, while those on drier islands have saddleback shells that arch up at the front, letting them stretch their necks to reach higher vegetation. Once hunted to the brink, many populations are recovering thanks to captive-breeding and repatriation programs.
